Less is More: Melodic Improvisation for Cellists
Time & Location
About the Event
For many musicians, especially those that may be new to the world of improvisation, the impulse is to just play more, especially when nervous. But shaping a melody is like telling a story -- the space between the notes can be your best friend.
Classically-trained String Master Crispin Campbell has dedicated his career to performing and teaching in multiple genres. As an essential collaborator in countless ensembles and combos, Crispin’s approach to improvisation is multi-pronged, sometimes as the rhythmic foundation, but just as often taking a solo chorus or two. In this free group session Crispin will demonstrate breaking down any melody’s basic elements, which can then be easily reconstructed in new and creative ways by the improvising musician. This class is ideal for classically-trained cellists at the intermediate or advanced level, and for improvising cellists that wish to go beyond just covering bass lines and comping.
This session will be held on String Masters, with its outstanding audio and video resolution and super easy way of sharing sheet music and charts right on your computer screen. Questions, ideas and discussion are encouraged. And don't forget your cello!
