Celtic Rhythmic Groove: Chopping and Shuffling

You’re already equipped to play melodically on your instrument. But Celtic music, like so many other non-classical musical styles, requires a strong rhythmic backbone in any ensemble. Here’s a chance to zero-in on rhythm.

3 Virtual Lessons on www.stringmasters.com

About the Event

In this shared private lesson series, String Master Natalie Haas, one of today’s most in-demand cellists and teachers, will show cellists, violinists and violists how to develop and use chop and shuffle bowing, bringing an essential rhythmic foundation to any contemporary or roots ensemble.

About this Series

In this series, limited to just five attendees, Natalie Haas will teach you the techniques of chop and shuffle bowings, essential rhythmic skills for today’s music. Since the lesson is small and live, you are assured of personal, one-on-one coaching directly with Natalie. Starting with Reels in the first lesson and Jigs in the second, by the end of the third lesson you’ll be able to put it all together for any musical situation!

Series Details

This series consists of three shared private lessons with other musicians.  There will be a maximum of 5 musicians in a shared private lesson. The series is appropriate for any cellist, violinist or violist at any level. The series will be entirely taught by ear, with no sheet music.

  • Lesson 1: Rhythm on bowed stringed instruments in the context of Celtic music (including chopping/shuffling/percussive hits) - reel (4/4) (ex: Shetland Set)
  • Lesson 2: Jig rhythms (jig, 6/8 and slipjig, 9/8) - (ex: Between)
  • Lesson 3: Putting it all together — how to create an arrangement for a tune melody from the accompanist’s perspective (including rhythmic, chordal and textural choices)

How to Prepare for your Session

Bring your instrument! Nothing else required.  Connection details to the private lesson series will be provided no later than 24 hours before the start of the first lesson or upon registration. Don’t forget your instrument!
