About the Event

Applying techniques of the martial arts to training on a stringed instrument is amazingly effective, a new pedagogy. The focus on movement patterns in martial arts training will open new perspectives for you as applied to playing your instrument, enabling you to discover how to use yourself fully as a player, leading to growing authentically as an artist.

Session: Applying Martial Arts Training to Optimize Your Playing Skills

Session DATE/Time: Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 8:00pm EDT

All violinists and violists who aspire to be teachers or performers are invited. The session will be divided into five distinct activities, each of which is designed to focus on specific playing techniques:

1. Spear Hand Strikes and Wrist Alignment of the Bow Arm

You will discover the wrist position that is proper for you after completing this activity.

2. Iken, “Yi-Quan”, (Chinese Yoga) and Wrist Position

This activity will provide another manner of forming a natural wrist position for both arms.

3. Tai Chi and the Bow/Arm Movement

This activity will help you realize the most natural bow arm movement for your

body type.

4. Boxing Stances and Leg Mobility in Violin Performance

You will gain an understanding of how to generate effortless motion from your feet.

5. Finding the Center (Hara, or Tan Tien)

You will learn how to hold your center so that your arms and legs are able to move freely and without excessive tension. You will receive exercise training, using a heavy object.  (Important: See the “How to Prepare section” below *)

How to Prepare for your Session

Bring your instrument and bow. *Also bring a long crowbar or sledgehammer, or short barbell, to be used in the fifth and final activity.  Connection details to the session will be provided no later than 24 hours before the start of the session or upon registration.
